Our BDM Rachael recently visited the Cake International Baking show at Manchester's Event City... she was amazed at how fantastic the cakes on display were, and how many cake gadgets and accessories there really are!
The unbelievable designs were for all occasions and they looked far too good to eat! There were wedding cakes, birthday cakes, christening, Cupcakes, and all the paraphernalia that goes with decorating them: jewells, lace icing, chocolate shoes and flowers, porcelain and sugar flowers. Mary Berry and Mich Turner decorated cakes and created recipes in front of live audiences, which was inspiring and a talent in itself.
You would never guess that the below image is a cake; it could pass as a model design....
The point being made is that cake baking and designing and decorating is most definitley an Art and the creative design skill set is absolutely fantastic and a true talent! Maybe we should start pushing bespoke cake designs as ways of marketing our clients businesses and organisations, sending out fantastic branded cakes out to prospective clients! (don't worry, we're only joking... but it may be worth considering for some clients especially those in the cake decorating industry)

Yesterday, I (Rachael- BDM) attended The Business Network: Central & East Lancashire ‘Sparkly’ Christmas Event. It was a fantastic networking opportunity where I met lots of new people and was introduced to some great businesses. Everyone in attendance had to wear something sparkly!
As its Christmas Karen Tems had organised some great entertainment; Ian and Julie Cooper from GB Music Events worked their magic and created ‘The Business Network Christmas Choir’!
We were told we would be singing “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” It has to be one of the most recognisable Christmas songs out there. I was a little worried how we would sound, well more importantly how I would sound, as I’m tone deaf and should never sing in public…However within 20 minutes we were turned into a choir singing in harmony (ish)! It was great fun and I think it really got everyone into the Christmas Spirit.

It’s that time of year again when we are all getting excited for the Christmas holidays...
We've had a busy December so far in the Studio; working away like Santa's elves creating great work for all of our clients and pitching for new business.
We have also been decorating the Christmas tree, listening to good old Michael Bublé’s Christmas album, and eating far too many cookies, shortbread and other goodies in the studio!
Oh well... ‘tis the season to be jolly (and fat)!

Rachael Worrall is a Business Development Manager, a doodler and an avid fan of event/party planning on both a professional and personal level. She also has a love of Jewellery Design, weddings, beaches, Gin, crunchy autumn leaves, skiing and Christmas time. Originally a ‘plastic scouser’ from the Wirral, she now lives in Preston with her Husband.
In 2008 Rachael graduated from Lancaster University Business School with a Bsc (Hons) in Marketing, she also studied Social Psychology as a minor during University. She is very interested in how the human mind works, and all forms of human behaviour. She joined the company in September 2013 to develop our profile and gain New Business; she believes a great Marketing strategy and utilisation of all communication tools is the key to a successful company presence whether it is B2B or B2C.
You will often find Rachael networking at business events and trade exhibitions. Rachael is our social media ‘voice’ and is always communicating industry news, and anything of interest for businesses to grow and expand their marketing, as well as useless bits of fun!

Our designers attended the latest BLAB at Band on the wall in Manchester. Talks were from Tom Muller and Kyle Bean who both are extremely talented people.
During Toms’ talk, he spoke about not keeping to one area of design and how he is always flexible with what briefs he takes on. One day he could be working on a comic book logo, the next he could be designing a website for a popstar. He’s hugely influenced by comic books from a young age, and is now enjoying designing for the industry amongst lots of other things.
Kyle showed a great display of his work, he has such a incredible skill working with paper and other materials.
His portfolio really does speak volumes and you can see why he was worked for such a great list of clients in a short space of time. One particular piece I really enjoyed looking at was the advert he created for Peugeot. The hours that were spent to make a 30 second advert are mind blowing. Luckily Kyle had the animators from Aardman to help with filming. You can view the advert here.
A print was given out at the end of the talks which was designed by May Ninth. It’s a great print and is ready to be put up in our studio.

Yesterday we got some new wall graphics put up around the office. Clients often ask us what colours we have used on our walls so we decided to put them on display and they look great!

You may or may not know that Twitter have recently launched a new app – Vine. It's the latest service from the social media platform that lets you create (and share, obviously) short, looping videos.
These 'Lego Vines' created by Mark Weaver have to be our favourites we have seen so far, such a simple idea but very well executed. We are massive fans of Lego here at Synergy so we are looking forward to seeing more Vines like this.

Recently we came across this great blog project from José Guizar. It’s a simple idea and executed brilliantly, we look forward to seeing more over the coming weeks.

After a competitive pitch, we're pleased to announce we have been chosen to design and develop all of Preston College's print and digital collateral for 2012/13.
Having worked with Preston College in the past it feels great to be back on board with them again. There are some really exciting things in the pipeline and we can't wait to get cracking!

A small tribute to the Synergy maypole: In Britain and Ireland, the maypole was found primarily in England and in areas of Wales, Scotland and Ireland which were under English influence.
Although the earliest recorded evidence comes from a Welsh poem written by Gryffydd ap Adda ap Dafydd in the mid-14th century, in which he described how people used a tall birch pole at Llanidloes, central Wales. Literary evidence for maypole use across much of Britain increases in later decades, and "by the period 1350-1400 the custom was well established across southern Britain, in town and country and in both Welsh-speaking and English-speaking areas."
The practice had become increasingly popular throughout the ensuing centuries, with the maypoles becoming "communal symbols" that brought the local community together - in some cases, poorer parishes would join up with neighbouring ones in order to obtain and erect one, whilst in other cases, such as in Hertfordshire in 1602 and Warwickshire in 1639, people stole the poles of neighbouring communities, leading to violence. In some cases the wood for the pole was obtained illegally, for instance in 1603, the earl of Huntingdon was angered when trees were removed from his estates for use as maypoles without his permission.

We recently came across these amazing little sculptures by Dalton Ghetti. Each one is hand carved from a pencil using just a sewing needle and scalpel blade!
"His idea is to bring people’s attention to small things. Small is beautiful. Most of the pencils he uses are found on the streets and sidewalks. Dalton’s work is a recycling process. He turns discarded objects into art.
To create his sculpture, he holds the pencil in his hand under a strong light source (table lamp or sunlight) and carves it mostly with a sewing needle and a very sharp, triangular, small, metal blade. He works at very small intervals: 1 to 2 hours maximum per day whenever he gets inspired. He works very slowly by removing specks of graphite at a time. It therefore takes months or sometimes years to complete a sculpture.
For Dalton, sculpting pencils is a hobby and a form of meditation, which requires a lot of patience. His pencil carvings are not for sale. He doesn’t do it for money. He sculpts pencils mostly for himself and his art comes from his heart. He wants to keep it that way."

Here at Synergy, we are inspired by and passionate about all areas of design, not merely print and digital. Recently we attended the Interiors UK exhibition at Birmingham's NEC and were very keen to see the design trends for 2012.
We were not disappointed. Each hall had a different theme and contained a vast range of furniture, lighting, soft furnishings, fabrics, flooring and accessories. The cascading stands and demonstrations presented exciting interior themes, ranging from industrial, vintage and statement glamour!
It was a great way to spend our Sunday and we will certainly be able to use and digest the trends for 2012 into the ongoing work within Synergy... So watch this space.

This year Krispy Kreme have created their doughnuts in a ‘cute’ appealing design, which we just LOVE.
Synergy sponsored and were represented by members of the creative team, at Blab 9, held in The Deaf Institute in Manchester recently.
Speakers Mat Heinl and Ian Anderson kept a packed forum entertained with their different presentational styles and invited us into their thinking and often amusing approach to how they work. The gulf between agencies/consultancies in terms of budgets, timescales and client buy-in is often wide, but the ‘show’ indicated that we all apply (or should do) the basic principles of the strategic/creative process to ensure we create successful and stunning work.

This year we've embraced technology and created an interactive experience using those cheeky little QR Codes.
If you're wondering what it's all about, all you need to do is download a QR reader app to your smart phone – we recommend RedLaser as this has proved the most reliable after testing (and it's free). Simply open the app, hold your camera lens over the QR Code and wait for it to scan. Once that's done you will be taken to the content (go to 'Open Browser' if prompted). We can't say too much more as we don't want to spoil the fun, all we will say is enjoy it and keep coming back each month – there are prizes to be won! Good luck.

Much eating (without cutlery), drinking and merriment was had by all and 'twas a fitting end to the year. There were sore feet (and heads) all round but what a night - MORE MEAD!

FontShop have recently released a mobile fonts pack for use in iOS apps. What this means is greater brand consistency across mobile devices, which can only be a good thing. Hopefully it’ll take off and become available cross-platform, we’ll wait and see but in the meantime you can find out more here.

A couple of months ago myself and Phil (Decode) were asked by MA Anthropology student Nija Dalal to take part in her ‘Typography and Urban Space’ thesis.
It was great meeting Nija, she’s from a design background and has now branched out into Anthropology but still with a healthy appreciation for design and typography. We found it a fascinating subject, thoroughly enjoyable and were glad we could help out. Good luck with your grade!

It’s that time of year again, where facial hair is grown (some more than others) and in the process we raise some money for a great cause. Plus the branding is great too.
“On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shave face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Mo Sistas are the women who register to support the men in their lives, raising funds by seeking sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.
Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.
At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.”
